  • UM-Flint Honor Society Prepares Care Packages

    Psi Chi, a national honor society for psychology majors and minors at the University of Michigan-Flint, has been busy for the past several weeks collecting donations for personal care packages that will be distributed to needy persons in the Flint area. Members `of the society set up collection points at some area churches and stores to collect mainly toiletry items that were packaged into individual portions.

     

  • A Concert with a Twist and a Tweet

    The University of Michigan-Flint Jazz Ensemble is encouraging the use of social media at its up-coming concert on Wednesday, December 9, at 7:30 PM in the University Theatre.  


    This concert will have the added feature of "Twittering" during the program.  Interested members of the audience are encouraged to bring a laptop computer or web browser so that they may Tweet during the concert their questions, comments or dialogue about the music.

  • UM-Flint Biology Professor Dies in Vermont

    Botanist, biologist, birder Bruce D. Parfitt of Johnson, Vermont died at Vermont Respite House in Williston Thursday morning, September 3, 2009. He was 56.

    Among colleagues at the University of Michigan-Flint he was a valued faculty member for 14 years, chair of the biology department from 2004-2007 and director of the university's herbarium, whose collection grew in size and value under his care.

    University of Michigan-Flint student, Miyako Jones, is one of 18 students in the country to receive a $10,000 academic scholarship through Google and the United Negro College Fund (UNCF).

     

  • Summer Music Academy Brings High School Students to Campus


    More than 50 area high school students are on campus participating in the Senior Summer Academy of Music. The junior segment, with 64 students, was held earlier in July and ended with a concert that packed the UM-Flint Theatre.

     

  • UM-Flint Student Art to Help Cancer Patients

    University of Michigan-Flint students from the Fine Arts and Education programs, under the artistic direction of Michael C. Sevick, associate professor of art, will embark on a special project for the Genesys Hurley Cancer Institute located in Flint. About a dozen students will be involved in the painting of a mural that will be located in the cancer institute's atrium.

    Besides being selected a Fulbright Scholar last year, the prestigious award given University of Michigan-Flint Associate Professor Susan Gano-Phillips Ph.D., included a 10 month residency for her family. Little did she realize that spending this past academic year helping to strengthen general education in Hong Kong universities, would lead to a great travel opportunity for her and her family.

    Christopher Paul Curtis ('00 BGS) has won his second Newberry Honor Book award. He won the same award in 1996 and is also the recipient of a Coretta Scott King Award. Curtis received the award for his book Elijah of Buxton (Scholastic).

     

  • Gift Helps Fund Medical Research at UM-Flint

    A new medical research laboratory will be dedicated at the University of Michigan-Flint on Thursday, January 31, 3 p.m., Room 283 Murchie Science Building. The Dr. Ben F. Bryer Medical Research laboratory is being dedicated in recognition of a gift for medical research from the Ben F. Bryer Foundation.

    The 41st Annual Math Field Day will take place Tuesday, February 26 on the University of Michigan-Flint campus. High school students will compete in individual and team competitions that test their mathematical skills.

    A founding faculty member of the University of Michigan-Flint has left the largest single gift from an individual donor to the University. The gift from the estate of Dorothea E. Wyatt, Ph.D., will take the history program to the next level of excellence.

     

  • Faculty Member Selected Fulbright Scholar

    Another University of Michigan-Flint faculty member has been selected as a Fulbright Scholar grantee. Susan Gano-Phillips, Ph.D., associate professor of psychology in the College of Arts and Sciences will travel to Hong Kong for the 2008-09 academic year.

     

  • Regents Approve UM-Flint Journalism Program

    A new journalism program that emphasizes online and community news was approved at the May 15 meeting of the U-M Board of Regents for a fall launch at the University of Michigan-Flint.

    In the Communication and Visual Arts department, new classes, as well as a partnership with Mott Community College, GASC, and MacProfessionals are in the works to begin a program in film. This will include production, theory, history, and criticism.
