Susan E. Borrego Appointed University of Michigan-Flint Chancellor
The University of Michigan Board of Regents today approved Susan E. Borrego as the next chancellor of UM-Flint. Borrego will begin her five-year appointment August 1, 2014.
Susan E. Borrego, Ph.D. to Be Recommended As Next Chancellor of the University of Michigan-Flint
University of Michigan President Mary Sue Coleman is recommending Susan E. Borrego, Ph.D., as the eighth leader of the University of Michigan-Flint. Borrego, who currently serves as the vice president for Enrollment Management, Planning, and Student Affairs at California State University, Dominguez Hills will begin her appointment August 1, 2014 pending approval by the University of Michigan Board of Regents. Inaugural festivities will be announced at a later date.
Congressman Dale Kildee Donates Papers, Artifacts to UM-Flint Library and Establishes Education Scholarship
Retired Congressman Dale. E. Kildee continues his longstanding support of the Flint community through a donation of key items from decades of work in Washington D.C. to the University of Michigan-Flint's Frances Willson Thompson Library. In addition, a scholarship honoring Kildee has been established that will benefit students aspiring to careers in education.
Noted Author and UM-Flint Alumnus Christopher Paul Curtis Brings "Writing Adventure" to Flint 4th Graders
Over 2,500 students have attended the "Writing Adventure" since it was first held five years ago. It was created to encourage young people to find the value in reading, to develop confidence in their own abilities as writers, and to see that people are interested in reading what they have to say.
Blood Drive and Memorial Tribute at UM-Flint to Honor 2013 Homicide Victims
The University of Michigan-Flint and the American Red Cross are joining together for the second year in a row to hold a blood drive and memorial to honor Flint homicide victims. The drive will be held on March 24.

UM-Flint Ready to Compete Against Other Area Schools in 5th Annual Recycling Challenge
Over the past four years, the friendly recycling competition among Baker College, Kettering University, Mott Community College, and the University of Michigan-Flint has kept nearly 164,000 pounds (82 tons) of recyclable material out of area landfills. Last year, 26 tons of recyclable materials were collected and organizers are hoping to top that number this year.

Alvin D. Loving, Ph.D., The University of Michigan's First African-American Professor
Alvin D. Loving, Ph.D. was one of the 16 founding faculty members, and the only African American, for what was to become the University of Michigan-Flint. Professor Loving is remembered for being the first African American full professor within the University of Michigan system.
