UM-Flint Invites Community to 2013 Earth Day Celebration

"EARTH MATTERS" is the theme of this year's annual Earth Day Celebration to be held on the University of Michigan-Flint campus on Saturday, April 13, 10 a.m.-3 p.m., Harding Mott University Center.

Kettering University and Mott Community College are co-sponsors of this fun-filled, informational, family friendly, free event. With more than 50 exhibitors, this event is among the largest environmental events of its kind in the county.

The Earth Day Celebration offers something for everyone. Here are just a few examples:

– Featured are unique exhibits such as the Green Craft Fair, where local artisans will be selling their original work made from recycled, all natural, or green materials.

– Laura Staudacher will be demonstrating how to fuse plastic shopping bags together to make "fabric".  Anyone is welcome to bring colorful, thicker plastic bags such as the ones that can be found at the mall.

– Throughout the event, the Food Forum will discuss local and sustainable food access, nutrition, and advice on growing your own vegetables.

– Performing at the event will be LoveGood, a Folk/Pop trio from the Flint area, and Jenna Noelle, a local acoustic guitarist and singer.

– Riley McClincha will also share songs and exciting stories about his river kayaking travels around the state, and adventures to Canada and Niagara Falls.

More than 50 exhibitors and presenters, including businesses, advocacy, and service groups, will be sharing their knowledge and expertise on many earth-friendly topics. Be sure to come and explore the live animals, family fun activities, local music talent, and the food forum!

"Earth Day is more than just about global warming; it's about taking ownership of what the Earth has to offer to us (i.e. gardening, outdoor recreational activities, and conservation)," said UM-Flint alum Albert Lee.

American Sign Language interpreters will be available for some of the presentations at Earth Day Celebration.
