UM-Flint Spring Dance Concert returns April 17-18 with Flint Artist in Residence, student performers
The University of Michigan-Flint will present its Spring Dance Concert at 7:30 p.m., April 17 and 18, marking the program's return to the main stage for the first time since 2022.

The concert will feature original works choreographed by UM-Flint dance faculty, the Michigan Momentum dance club and the Swing Dance club. The 2025-26 Flint Artist in Residence, Shanzell Page, will also premiere a new work, "Seeds & Fruit," developed during her residency at UM-Flint.
Working as a producer, choreographer and performer throughout her residency, Page reflected on the unique experience with the university.
"With the space, time and resources to build something more expansive, 'Seeds & Fruit' has grown beyond a production into something more immersive within my personhood," Page said. "It's a specific kind of support that changes what feels possible."
Page added that the work reflects her life as much as her artistry. "The process and the piece have been unfolding alongside each other, so none of my practice is separated from my approach," she said. "It feels like a testimony in essence, with permission to take up space fully."

For students, the production has offered an opportunity to work alongside a professional artist and experience the impact of a fully produced main stage production. Nazli Kurt, a biology major with a pre-med concentration who took the Dance Repertory course this semester, said the dance program provided a critical outlet during a demanding academic year.
"Being able to express my emotions through art is the best way to balance my journey as I study to be a doctor," said the sophomore from Turkey. "This dance class was an escape from all the pressure and drama. I am loving the opportunity in UM-Flint's curriculum — it is definitely a clear approach to my personal expression."
Beth Freiman, lecturer IV in the dance program, said the return of the concert, and Page's involvement in particular, represents a meaningful moment for the program.
"As the first Spring Dance Concert since 2022, I'm excited for the students to perform in a fully supported main stage production," she said. "I'm also grateful and looking forward to seeing our students in Shanzell's new dance work. It is a special opportunity."
