UM-Flint and Kettering Prove They Are Green
The University of Michigan-Flint and Kettering University took top prizes in a month-long recycling challenge.
UM-Flint, Kettering, Mott Community College, and Baker each had a recycling trailer or "roll-off" container placed on its campus during the month of March. Recyclables collected were: mixed paper, cardboard, plastics 1-7, and metal.
The 2011 event was sponsored by Waste Management Inc. and Genesee County Metropolitan Planning Commission. The material was sorted, weighed, and sent to end markets for reuse. According to Waste Management calculations, the four schools recycled 22.1 tons; saved 84 cubic yards of landfill space; saved 227 mature trees; saved 132,150 gallons of water; and saved 113,412 kw-hr of electricity.
The winners were announced at the annual Earth Day Celebration on Saturday, April 16, held at UM-Flint. Two prizes of $300 dollars were awarded: UM-Flint won the prize for the college that recycled the most materials by weight, and Kettering University won for the most pounds per enrolled student.
