UM-Flint lauded by The Military Times for veteran friendliness
Already recognized once this academic year, the University of Michigan-Flint has earned acknowledgment from The Military Times via its 2025 "Best for Vets" rankings. It is the fourth consecutive year UM-Flint has been added to the list. For more than a decade, the Times has recognized colleges and universities with "a commitment to supporting veterans and military service members throughout their academic journey."
This year, more than 300 schools have been ranked based on various criteria, such as financial support opportunities, student success, and the evaluation of veteran support programs. By combining data from surveys conducted by The Times, as well as public data from the departments of Education and Veterans Affairs, the list provides a comprehensive resource for military service members to make informed decisions about their education.
"The Military Times is a publication that is sent out to military bases and installations everywhere," said Helen Budd, program manager for UM-Flint's Student Veterans Association. "We look forward to the next semester to see where things go. We have 65 new student veteran admits for the winter semester and that number is growing every day."
Budd says that inclusion in The Times means recognition worldwide and will help attract new student veterans, even if they aren't originally from Michigan. Earlier this semester, the downtown campus was also recognized by the Michigan Veterans Affairs Association as a gold-level veteran-friendly school.
Since the beginning of the fall semester, UM-Flint's Student Veterans Resource Center has organized various events and initiatives for military service members, veterans and their dependents. These Include writing cards to military service members and their families, graduate recognition events, and a Toys for Tots drive. Recently, the SVRC introduced a Canvas page and a Discord server to help student veterans connect with each other.
