UM-Flint Assisting Two-Day "Soup Per Bowl" Event to Fight Homelessness

University of Michigan-Flint students, faculty, and community volunteers recently completed a special project in the ceramics studio in which they made 300 bowls that will be sold at a new fundraising event called "Soup Per Bowl". 

It will be held over two-days during the weekend of Feb. 2 and 3.

Day 1: Saturday, February 2, 11 a.m.- 3 p.m. at St. Michael Parish, 609 East 5^th Ave.

Modeled after the popular Empty Bowls initiative, the community will have the opportunity to purchase ceramic bowls for $15, which will include soup, bread, and salad.

Spoken word and live music entertainment will also be provided.  Monies generated from the sales of the bowls will be donated to the Homeless Prevention Endowment Fund.

Bowls are being donated by Cristen Velliky ceramics instructor at UM-Flint; soup and bread donations are being provided by Catholic Charities, the Lunch Studio, Ciao Amici's, Churchill's, Blackstone's, and the French Laundry.

Day 2: Sunday, February 3, 2013 from 11a.m.-3 p.m., Holy Angels Warming Center, 517 East 5^th Ave., the old St. Michaels School.

The second day will be a day of unity and community where homeless people will get together with other members of the community and enjoy the company of one another. Meals will be donated.

The monies raised will be contributed to the Homeless Prevention Endowment Fund at the Community Foundation of Greater Flint.

The event is also being held in cooperation with Metro Community Development, a non-profit organization with the charge "to serve as a leader and catalyst to expand and enhance quality housing and community development initiatives and partnerships in Flint and Genesee County, leading to the creation of stable and vibrant neighborhoods and communities."   The Continuum of Care (COC) is a committee under the auspices of Metro Community Development with the intention to launch the "Soup Per Bowl" event.
