CAS' "Elements of Success" campaign

The College of Arts and Sciences has launched the "Elements of Success" campaign. UM-Flint is expanding and improving MSB to provide greater student/faculty learning experiences by creating state-of-the-art labs and student spaces.

The "Elements of Success" campaign will enhance aspects of the expansion by supporting student research experiences; student clubs, organizations, and competitions; K-12 outreach activities; tutoring and other academic supports; and equipment purchases for research and laboratories.

As part of the Murchie Science Building (MSB) expansion, UM-Flint will install a large periodic table of elements in a prominent public space within the building. Each of the 118 elements will feature a donor(s) who champions student success at UM-Flint. Choose your element today to be part of this unique display of support.

20th Annual Veterans Day Remembrance Ceremony, 11/11

The Veterans Day Planning Committee invites faculty and staff to the 20th annual Veterans Day Remembrance Ceremony on Nov. 11. Breakfast begins at 9 a.m., and a program featuring Major General Gale Pollock – the first female Acting Surgeon General of the Army – begins at 10 a.m. All are welcome, but please RSVP.

Become a UM-Flint Orientation Leader

The Student Success Center is seeking applicants to be an Orientation Leader, a position that pays an hourly wage. Interested students can attend the final information meeting on Thurs., Nov. 14 at 5 p.m. in the Murchie Science Building, room 319.

3rd annual Door Decorating Contest for International Education Week

The International Center will be leading International Education Week (IEW) once again this year with many events from Nov. 18-22, including the 3rd Annual Door Decorating Contest.

The campus is once again invited to participate in this competitive and fun event, especially as a way to demonstrate commitment to international students and international education. If you and/or your department are interested in participating, please register by Fri., Nov. 8.

GIS and Data Day, 11/13

University Outreach's Geographic Information Systems Center invites faculty, staff, and community to GIS and Data Day, Nov.13 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the GIS Center on the 2nd floor of Northbank Center.

Learn how local organizations are using data visualization to inform program operations and community engagement. There is no cost to attend. The event is open to the public; light refreshments will be provided. Registration required.

Family Swim Night, 11/15

The Center for Gender and Sexuality and Recreational Services will host a Family Swim Night on Fri., Nov. 15 from 5-7 p.m. in the Rec Center. Admission is free for students, faculty, staff, and their families. Register by Nov. 11.

Educational field trip! Ziibiwing Center of Anishinabe Culture & Lifeways

Join the Intercultural Center and the Anthropology Club in touring the Ziibiwing Center of Anishinabe Culture & Lifeways to learn more about the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe of Michigan and other Great Lakes Anishinabek. The Fri., Nov. 15 trip will be from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. and includes free transportation, tour, and lunch. For more information, and to RSVP, visit the link.

Conceptualizing Public Engagement workshops to be held in Nov.

The Office of the Provost, University Outreach, and the Faculty Advisory Committee to Outreach invite you to participate in one of the Conceptualizing Public Engagement (CPE) Workshops to be held Nov. 12th, 13th, and 15th.

During the workshops, you will have guided brainstorming sessions to reflect on public engagement at UM-Flint and share current engagement activities. We also want to know what is holding you back from more robust public engagement. Snacks provided!

Javanese Dance Workshop, 11/11

Join the Anthropology Club, CGS, Intercultural Center, and several other departments and groups for "Gender Conformity and Non-Conformity: A Javanese Dance Workshop" on Mon., Nov. 11 from 5:30 -7 p.m. in the Northbank Dance Studio.

Classical Javanese dance, codified in the courts of Central Java in Indonesia, is one strand of a vibrant set of Javanese performing arts forms. This workshop will include a presentation on gender within Javanese classical dance, as well as how concepts of gender in Java are dealt with in other forms of Javanese dance performance, both traditional and modern.

An interactive opportunity to learn Javanese dance will follow. At the event, you will also be able to learn about an exciting opportunity to travel to Indonesia in the summer of 2020 for course credit. For more information, contact Daniel Birchok at [email protected].
