UM-Flint Announces 4^th Year of Partnership with Curiosity Academy

FLINT, Mich.—The University of Michigan-Flint's Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry announced its continuing partnership in the fourth year of Curiosity Academy. This community-based STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics concepts) program for 6^th-8^thgrade girls in Genesee County provides a risk-free learning environment during the school year. Additional community partner institutions include Kettering University and Sloan-Longway.

Over the last three years, participants have built circuits and batteries, learned statistics, studied the science of light, explored forensic science, and conducted bacterial transformation. Each week offers a fun and educational experience in a UM-Flint lab or at a community partner institution. "I have been thoroughly impressed with the enthusiasm expressed by program participants and their interest in STEM concepts," said Essence Wilson of Communities First, Inc., Co-Director of Curiosity Academy. "We are happy to see our passion for science and math inspiring the next generation."

Applications are being accepted for the 2017-18 school year. The program runs October-April on Mondays from 4-6 p.m. Up to 20 girls will be accepted and the program cost is $150. Tuition assistance and transportation support are available. For more information, please visit Curiosity Academy.
