UM-Flint School Of Health Professions and Studies Dean Leaving for Position at the University of Akron
Gerard Voland, Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, announced that School of Health Professions and Studies Dean David Gordon MD has accepted a position at the University of Akron. Dean Gordon will be named the Dean of the College of Health Professions at the University of Akron, pending a vote by the Board of Trustees.
"I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at the University of Michigan-Flint and as part of the University of Michigan Health System," stated Dean Gordon. "I am very proud of the good work that so many people accomplished for our students and for the improved health of our community. There is obviously much still left to be done, and if I can provide any assistance from the vantage point of my new position, I will be most happy to do so."
Dean Gordon was appointed to his position at UM-Flint in July 2011. During his time as Dean of the School of Health Professions and Studies (SHPS), Dean Gordon was instrumental in helping his colleagues to move the school forward during a period of record enrollment growth. In the last few years, new degree programs, including the university's first PhD program in Physical Therapy were launched, as well as a health navigation program, extra tracks added to the Doctor of Nursing Practitioner Program, and progressing to UM-Flint's own Masters in Public Health. In an effort to accommodate additional enrollment, Dean Gordon also worked across campus with colleagues to expand space necessary for SHPS and its programs.
"I appreciate the work of Dean Gordon to lead the School of Health Professions and Studies over the last few years," said Voland. "I wish him well in all his future endeavors and thank him for his service." Prior to arriving at UM-Flint Dean Gordon was professor of pathology and associate dean for diversity and career development at the University of Michigan Medical School in Ann Arbor.
Dean Gordon's last day at UM-Flint will be October 31, 2014. An interim dean for the school will be announced in the coming weeks.
