2014 UM-Flint Academic Affairs Convocation

The University of Michigan-Flint held its annual Academic Affairs Convocation August 27 at the university theatre to welcome new faculty and honor those receiving faculty awards, promotion and/or tenure, and to recognize those receiving service awards.

Chancellor Susan E. Borrego lauded the recipients and said the university community will create the vision for the campus.

"While I have some themes that are important to me, and some hopes and dreams, I think the vision is what we create together," she said.

Thirty-five new faculty were welcomed at the event. Fourteen faculty received promotions and/or tenure. Fourteen were honored with service awards, ranging from 10 or more years of service at the university, to forty years or more.

The faculty awards:

Stephen Turner, Associate Professor of Computer Science

Scholarly or Creative Achievement Award

Erin Cavusgil, Associate Professor of Marketing

Scholarly or Creative Achievement Award

Jie Song, Associate Professor of Chemistry

Lucinda Hinsdale Stone Junior Women Faculty Award

Shelby Newport, Assistant Professor of Theatre

Alvin D. Loving Junior Faculty Initiative Award

Murali Mani, Associate Professor of Computer Science

Lawrence D. Kugler Academic Advisor Excellence Award

Suzanne Knezek, Associate Professor of Education

Dr. Lois Matz Rosen Junior Excellence in Teaching Award

Laura McLeman, Assistant Professor of Mathematics

Olivia P. Maynard and Olof Karlstrom Faculty Award for Civic Engagement

Beverley Smith, Associate Professor of Anthropology

2014-15 Collegiate Lecturer Award

Stevens Wandmacher, Chair and Lecturer of Philosophy

UM-Flint Nominee for the Michigan Distinguished Professor of the Year

Joseph Sucic, Professor of Biology
