UM-Flint names Timothy E. Bates professor of practice at College of Innovation & Technology
The University of Michigan-Flint has named Timothy E. Bates as a professor of practice in the College of Innovation & Technology. Bates, an African American visionary with a storied career that spans several decades in the tech industry, brings a wealth of experience and a track record of transformative leadership to the role.
Raised in Detroit, Bates navigated the predominantly white tech corridors without a formal degree. His career has been marked by significant roles at major organizations, including the U.S. Marshals Service, U.S. Marines, General Motors, Lenovo and Deloitte, where he served in capacities ranging from North American lead IT security manager to global chief technology officer.
In his new role with UM-Flint, Bates will leverage his extensive industry experience to bridge the gap between academic learning and practical application, preparing students for the demands of the modern workforce. His focus will be on crafting innovative programs that equip students with essential skills, ensuring they emerge not only as job-ready but as industry leaders upon graduation.
