First UM-Flint Faculty Member Selected for ACE Fellows Program

The American Council on Education (ACE) has selected a University of Michigan-Flint faculty member as one of 47 emerging college and university leaders for the 2015-16 class of the ACE Fellows Program.

Stephen Turner, Associate Professor of Computer Science in the College of Arts and Sciences, will be combining retreats, interactive learning opportunities, visits to campuses and other higher education-related organizations, and placement at another higher education institution to condense years of on-the-job experience and skills development into a single year.

"As a 2015-16 ACE Fellow, I'm very excited about this coming year, as it is an incredible learning opportunity for me," said Turner. "I'll spend the next year focusing on an issue of importance to UM-Flint, as well as working under the mentorship of the president and senior officers of another institution to learn about institutional culture, policies, and decision-making processes."

While UM-Flint has hosted an ACE Fellow, Turner is the first faculty member to be selected for the program.

Established in 1965, the ACE Fellows Program—the longest running leadership development program in the United States—focuses on identifying and preparing the next generation of senior leadership for the nation's colleges and universities.

"I will be participating in key meetings and events, working on special projects and assignments, examining best practices, and attending focused seminars, as well as national meetings," noted Turner.

At the conclusion of the fellowship year, Fellows return to their home institution with new knowledge and skills that contribute to capacity-building efforts.
