School of Management to Host Wall Street Journal Editor

One of the most important national and local economic issues will be explored during a special presentation at the University of Michigan-Flint. James R. Hagerty, an editor at The Wall Street Journal, will speak on “Envy of the World? How We Created the Mortgage Meltdown and Where We Go from Here” as part of the School of Management Dean’s Speaker Series.

One of the most important national and local economic issues will be explored during a special presentation at the University of Michigan-Flint. James R. Hagerty, an editor at The Wall Street Journal, will speak on "Envy of the World? How We Created the Mortgage Meltdown and Where We Go from Here" as part of the School of Management Dean's Speaker Series. Hagerty's presentation is free and open to the public. It will be held in Room 1205 of the William S. White Building on Friday, March 28 at 6 p.m.

"We are pleased to have Mr. Hagerty discuss such an important issue facing so many people both locally and nationally," said School of Management (SOM) Dean Jack Helmuth. "This is a special opportunity for our students and the community to get a unique perspective on this important economic issue."

James R. (Bob) Hagerty has covered housing and economics for The Wall Street Journal since January 2004. He holds a bachelor's degree in economics and journalism from the University of North Dakota. Since graduating in 1978, he has worked as a reporter and editor for The Wall Street Journal and for its overseas editions in New York, Hong Kong, London, Brussels and Atlanta. He has served as managing editor of The Asian Wall Street Journal and London bureau chief for The Wall Street Journal. He also has worked for the International Herald Tribune in Paris and London.

In August 1986, Mr. Hagerty rejoined Dow Jones as a news editor for The Wall Street Journal Europe in Brussels and was also a reporter and deputy managing editor for the paper. In July 1993, he returned to the Asian Journal as page-one editor, and in July 1994, he was named managing editor of the paper. Returning to the U.S. in March 1998, he was deputy bureau chief in Atlanta until being named London bureau chief in February 2000. He moved to the New York bureau in May 2003.

Mr. Hagerty won the 2000 New Jersey Society of Professional Journalists Award in the business reporting category for his January 25, 1999 article, "Tough as Nails."
