TechGuide.org has recognized the University of Michigan-Flint's online bachelor's degree in data science as the No. 5 program of its kind in the nation.

According to its website, TechGuide "helps students and professionals make confident, data-driven decisions about analytics and computer science education and careers. From selecting the right degree program to understanding long-term career outcomes, (they) provide clear, practical guidance at every step."

The ranking is based on results compiled from the Integrated Post-Secondary Education Data System and College Navigator.

"Using this data, we evaluate the metrics that matter most to students: admissions selectivity, class size and faculty support, financial aid availability, graduation outcomes, and total enrollment—highlighting what makes programs strong and how students thrive," TechGuide said in a release.

"Employers prioritize hiring individuals with real-world problem-solving skills, not simply credentials on a resume," said Amal Alhosban, director of the College of Innovation and Technology's computing division at UM-Flint. "Our online program in data science equips students with practical skills by teaching them industry-standard tools such as Python, SQL, R, and various cloud platforms. Through hands-on experience with real-world data analyses and dashboard creation, students learn to prepare data, develop models and clearly communicate their insights—so they're ready to make an immediate impact in organizations from the start."

UM-Flint's bachelor's and master's programs in data science and data analytics are complemented by the Institute for Data Engineering, Analytics, and Science, which was launched in 2023. IDEAS serves as a hub for data-focused education, research, and practice, bringing together the expertise of UM-Flint faculty and the enthusiasm of students to address the needs of both community partners and industry.

Students studying both online and in-person benefit from CIT's close partnership with industry leaders. Those relationships help UM-Flint create cocurricular experiences, innovation and entrepreneurship opportunities, and leadership training for students studying data science and related areas. CIT industry partners include Consumers Energy, Ford Motor Company, General Motors, Lear Corporation, Verizon Wireless and more.
