UM-Flint encourages participation in 'day of service' for MLK Day 2018
The University of Michigan-Flint will celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with a series of service opportunities on MLK Day 2018.
"It's a day for us not only to honor Dr. King and the transforming work that he did, but it's a chance for us to continue our relationships with our community partners, " said Gary Ashley, project coordinator within University Outreach at UM-Flint. "Working with our partners year-round is something that we value and it allows for us to collectively make a larger impact on our community."
Volunteers, including university faculty, staff, and students are encouraged to register for a wide variety of community outreach opportunities throughout the day on January 15.
This includes opportunities at:
- Crossover Downtown Outreach Ministry
- Boys and Girls Club of Greater Flint
- Genesee County Habitat for Humanity
- Joy Tabernacle
- King Karate
- My Brother's Keeper
- Carriage Town Ministries
- United Way of Genesee County
- The Sylvester Broome Empowerment Village
- Ele's Place
- YWCA of Greater Flint
Last year, nearly 200 volunteers served more than 1,000 hours in the community.
The day of service will kick off with a volunteer breakfast. All of campus is invited. Rev. Dan Scheid of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Flint will deliver an opening address.
Michigan Blood will also hold a blood drive on campus from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Happenings Room of the University Center.
