Wreaking havoc: Invasive species in Michigan

Heather Dawson, associate professor of Biology, talks invasive species in Michigan.

February 24-28 is National Invasive Species Awareness Week, a time to learn more about the exotic species that are having adverse effects on the local environment as well as the economy.

While invasive species are a problem the world over, Michigan is particularly vulnerable thanks to the Great Lakes, which serve as shipping routes for international vessels. More than 180 invasive species now call the Great Lakes home.

Associate Professor of Biology Heather Dawson sat down to highlight three of Michigan's most invasive species.

If you're interested in learning more, consider UM-Flint's undergraduate program in Wildlife Biology or the M.S. in Biology, both of which offer hands-on research opportunities for students.
