As the likelihood of wintry weather increases, campus leaders would like to remind the university community about our Inclement Weather policy for reducing operations or class cancellation in an emergency weather situation and how to sign up for UM-Flint Emergency Alerts.

In the event of severe weather conditions, the university may declare an emergency reduction in operations and reduce non-critical operations on campus. During such a time, only faculty and staff who have been previously designated as critical should report to campus. Non-critical faculty and staff should not report to work during reduced operations unless authorized by their direct supervisor. For more information, see the university's Standard Practice Guide on Emergency Reduction in Operations, SPG 201.27.

Each school, college, and administrative unit is responsible for identifying both the operations and the specific employees designated as critical to report to campus during reduced operations.

In addition to closing due to inclement weather, the university may also close due to other unforeseen circumstances. In the instance of reduced operations or closure, a campus-wide notification will be made through the UM-Flint Emergency Alert system (includes text message, phone call), email, the UM-Flint website, and local media outlets. Faculty, staff, and students are encouraged to sign up for the UM-Flint Emergency Alert system through the UM-Flint website.

In the event severe weather begins after staff members are at work, staff wishing to leave early will need authorization from their supervisor and will need to record time away appropriate with timekeeping codes (i.e. vacation time or excused time without pay) since the campus has not officially implemented a reduction in operations notice. All UM-Flint faculty and staff are encouraged to familiarize themselves with their respective department plans in the event of weather-related campus reduction of service or class cancellations.
