'Mathematics can be fun' is the concept behind a family-oriented project sponsored by the University of Michigan-Flint Education Department. Nearly 100 UM-Flint students majoring in elementary education will participate in a Family Math Night at Durant-Tuuri-Mott Community School on Thursday, November 29 at 5 p.m.

As part of a service learning project, the UM-Flint students will help to provide the school's 570 elementary students with a better understanding of mathematics. The UM-Flint students will form 30 activity stations for the elementary students and their parents. They will make posters that will be displayed at each station describing the activity.

Over the past few years, UM-Flint elementary education students have presented Math Nights at a number of schools in Grand Blanc and Flint.

"Family Math Night is a great opportunity for our teacher candidates to get real hands-on experience interacting with kids and parents," said Matt Wyneken, associate professor of education. "For the elementary students, it's a learning experience on a STEM topic that is not often thought of as fun."
