UM-Flint Students to Receive Award for Dedication to Community Service
Michigan Campus Compact (MCC) announced 11 students from the University of Michigan-Flint will be awarded for their dedication and commitment to community service during the 14th annual Outstanding Student Service Awards, April 10, 2010, at the Kellogg Hotel and Conference Center in East Lansing, Mich.
Each year, MCC awards students from member colleges and universities across the state for their outstanding commitment to service-learning and civic engagement. Three types of awards are given: the Outstanding Community Impact Award, the Commitment to Service Award, and the Heart and Soul Award. Awardees were selected from a nomination pool of nearly 900 students. This year, 192 students from 34 member campuses will receive awards.
Ja'Nel Jamerson, sophomore from Flint, will receive the Outstanding Community Impact Award. This award is given students who have made service an integral part of their college experience by their significant contribution to community resources. The recipient's efforts build partnerships between their campuses and communities to demonstrate personal reflection and a commitment to lifelong engagement. Only eight students will receive this award.
Melissa Allen, a senior from Grand Blanc, will receive the Commitment to Service Award. This award is given to one student per member campus in the state of Michigan for their commitment to community service. Only 34 students will receive this award.
Genny Carley, Kimberly Clark, Amanda Forsmark, Samantha Honea, Nicholaus Josey, Wade Merrill, Vanessa Smith, Nicole Terry, and Cameron Waites will receive the Heart and Soul Award. This award is given to students to recognize their time, effort and personal commitment through service.
Michigan Campus Compact is a coalition of college and university presidents who are committed to fulfilling the public purpose of higher education.
