Veterans Day at UM-Flint Highlighted by Opening of Student Veterans Center
The traditional morning Remembrance Ceremony and the afternoon dedication of a new center for student veterans are all part of University of Michigan-Flint's 2009 observance of Veterans Day.
The 11th annual Veterans Day Remembrance Ceremony will be held on Wednesday, November 11, in the Michigan Rooms (University Center). A light breakfast will be available beginning at 9 a.m. The program will begin promptly at 9:30 with a welcome from Chancellor Ruth Person.
As is tradition, program will conclude with the group being led by a bagpiper (Dr. Lynn Lebeck) to the Veterans Memorial Rock located at the tip of the horseshoe drive in front of the UCEN.
The theme for this year's observance is Student Veterans. The Keynote Speaker is UM-Flint student veteran Jeremy Glasstetter. He is state director of Student Veterans of America and founder and president of the Flint Chapter. Ex-POW from Korea, Dallas Mossman will also speak.
The Student Veteran theme will be carried over to the 3 p.m. dedication of the newly constructed Student Veterans Resource Center. A ceremony featuring remarks from student veterans, alumni, and UM-Flint administration will officially dedicate the center.
The unique program offers student veterans:
-a centralized source of information and support for returning veterans, allowing a seamless transition
-freshmen level classes designed specifically for undergraduate student veterans in that very important first year of college
-In addition, support is provided for veterans who have taken college-level coursework previously at UM-Flint or elsewhere.
