UM-Flint Awarded Brighter Futures Grant

A new program will encourage University of Michigan-Flint students and alumni to work on-site with students at Flint Northern High School to help eighth and ninth graders, to gain proficiency in mathematics. The program entitled, University of Michigan-Flint Community Math Partnership is being funded by a Brighter Futures Grant awarded by the Michigan Campus Compact (MCC).

A NEW PROGRAM WILL ENCOURAGE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN-FLINT STUDENTS AND ALUMNI TO WORK ON-SITE WITH STUDENTS AT FLINT NORTHERN HIGH SCHOOL TO HELP EIGHTH AND NINTH GRADERS, TO GAIN PROFICIENCY IN MATHEMATICS. THE PROGRAM ENTITLED, UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN-FLINT COMMUNITY MATH PARTNERSHIP IS BEING FUNDED BY A BRIGHTER FUTURES GRANT AWARDED BY THE MICHIGAN CAMPUS COMPACT (MCC). BY PROVIDING STUDENTS WITH TUTORIAL SUPPORT, THE UNIVERSITY HOPES TO HELP REVERSE THE DOWNWARD TREND IN MATH PROFICIENCY AT THE HIGH SCHOOL. AS UM-FLINT STUDENTS GAIN A GREATER SENSE OF SELF AND PURPOSE BY WORKING WITH THE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS, THE STUDENTS AT NORTHERN WILL GAIN SKILLS THAT WILL ALLOW THEM TO MEET THE PENDING STATE OF MICHIGAN GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS IN MATHEMATICS. TUTORING IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN IN JANUARY.

The University of Michigan-Flint Community Math Partnership is one of eleven award recipients in the 2007-2008 granting cycle, which began September 1st. Michigan Campus Compact's Brighter Futures Grants are financial awards up to $6,000 that are part of MCC's Investing in College Futures (ICF) Learn and Serve grant program, funding projects that positively impact disadvantaged youth. Application for ICF funds is open to faculty, staff and students on MCC member campuses who wish to partner with a community agency in order to benefit disadvantaged youth and positively reinforce the merits of higher education among current college students and disadvantaged youth.

Michigan Campus Compact is a state-level non-profit organization that promotes the education and commitment of Michigan college students to be civically engaged citizens, through creating and expanding academic, co-curricular and campus-wide opportunities for community service, service-learning and civic engagement. Support from the Corporation for National and Community Service: Learn and Serve America, will assist MCC in implementing the ICF grant program, supporting the sustainable service-learning projects generated through the program and enhancing the educational landscape for current and future students.
