UM-Flint Announces Tuition for 2008-2009 Academic Year
Tuition at the University of Michigan-Flint for the 2008/2009 academic year will increase less than 6%, while institution financial aid will jump almost 8%. The University of Michigan Board of Regents approved a 5.9% increase for in-state, full-time undergraduate students at the June 19 meeting. This latest increase is the lowest at the University of Michigan-Flint in the past three years.
IU KOKOMO'S PERSON APPOINTED NEW CHANCELLOR OF UM-FLINT
Ruth J. Person, chancellor of Indiana University Kokomo, has been appointed as the seventh leader of the University of Michigan-Flint. The University of Michigan Board of Regents approved her appointment at the June 19 meeting. Person, an alumna of the U of M, will assume her new role on August 18.
UM-Flint to Transform Abandoned House into Urban Laboratory
An abandoned house near downtown Flint is being turned into an Urban Alternatives House (UAH), which will be used as both a classroom and laboratory to teach and explore better ideas for urban living. The UAH located at 519 Garland Street will provide an example of an energy efficient building that can be monitored and used to illustrate the functioning of energy generating devices, storm water management systems and landscape management
2009 Critical Issues Forum Speakers Selected
The University of Michigan-Flint is pleased to announce the speakers for the 2009 Frances Willson Thompson Critical Issues Forum. This year's forum brings four speakers to Flint who are nationally and internationally recognized in their fields. The lineup for 2009 includes:
Dr. David Walton – physician, humanitarian and world health expert
Zanny Minton-Beddoes – economist
Newt Gingrich – politician, architect of the "Contract with America"
Jerome Ringo – environmentalist, President of the Apollo Alliance.The 2009 Frances Willson Thompson Critical Issues Forum begins April 23 with Jerome Ringo. The noon luncheon will be held at the Northbank Center in downtown Flint.
A series ticket is $125.00.
UM-Flint Classes Related to TV and Film Production
In the Communication and Visual Arts department, new classes, as well as a partnership with Mott Community College, GASC, and MacProfessionals are in the works to begin a program in film. This will include production, theory, history, and criticism.
Beloved Professor Matthew Hilton-Watson Passes Suddenly
It is with extraordinary sadness that we announce that Associate Professor Matthew Hilton-Watson passed away unexpectedly Monday afternoon. Matt was in the midst of doing what he loved – teaching students.
SPRING! And UM-Flint Fills the Air with Beautiful Music
Like the arrival of spring Robins, many music lovers look forward to the Annual Vocal Arts Festival at the University of Michigan-Flint. The spring festival is a highlight of the Department of Music and is an opportunity to showcase the talents of the vocal ensembles, which consist of both music and non-music majors.
This year's Festival will feature two events:
• Vocal Arts Recital on Thursday, March 26, 7:30 p.m., in 164 French Hall
• Vocal Arts Festival Concert, April 5, 4:00pm at St. Paul's Episcopal ChurchPre-Engineering Courses to be Offered to Lapeer Students
A unique new program, to begin in Fall 2008, will help prepare Lapeer High School seniors for a future career in engineering, and give them a jump on their college education. The University of Michigan-Flint is joining with the Lapeer County Intermediate School District Education and Technology Center to offer the pre-engineering program.
Two UM-Flint Programs Receive Grants
The Michigan Initiative for Innovation & Entrepreneurship (MIIE) has announced 20 entrepreneurship grants totaling $1.3 million, bolstered with $2.2 million in matching funds from universities and private businesses.
Alumnus Helps Establish Unique Internships
Students interested in engineering now have an opportunity for a paid internship leading to guaranteed full-time employment at a unique military engineering center. Thanks to the efforts of the University of Michigan-Flint Academic Advising and Career Center and a chance meeting with an alumnus.
