UM-Flint Receives President's Honor Roll Award for Service

The University of Michigan-Flint has been named to the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for exemplary service efforts and service to disadvantaged youth. The university was recently selected for the honor by the Corporation for National and Community Service."The University of Michigan-Flint is delighted to be named to the President's 2007 Community Service Honor Roll. Fundamental to our mission as a public university is service to the people of Flint, Genesee County, and Michigan," said UM-Flint Interim Chancellor Jack Kay. "I am proud of our students, faculty, and staff for their tremendous civic engagement."

Launched in 2006, the Community Service Honor Roll is the highest federal recognition a school can achieve for its commitment to service-learning and civic engagement. Honorees for the award were chosen based on a series of selection factors including scope and innovativeness of service projects, percentage of student participation in service activities, incentives for service, and the extent to which the school offers academic service-learning courses.

"The University of Michigan-Flint works to foster the spirit of civic engagement among our faculty and students by providing a wide variety of opportunities for them to demonstrate both their compassion and commitment. We have a long list of projects that include school partnerships like those with Washington Elementary School in Flint and the Westwood Heights School District, the partnership with the GISD to sponsor the Genesee Early College, the promotion of art and our environment through the Green Arts Project, Super Science Friday and other similar events, and the various health promotion projects offered by the Urban Health and Wellness Center. University Outreach has a fourteen year history of facilitating university-community engagement and partnership. To succeed together as a community, we must continue to work together as a community. I am proud of UM-Flint and all of our partners that contributed to us receiving this recognition," said Assistant Vice Chancellor of Institutional Advancement, Renee Zientek.

The Honor Roll is jointly sponsored by the Corporation, through its Learn and Serve America program, and the Department of Education, the Department of Housing and Urban Development, USA Freedom Corps, and the President's Council on Service and Civic Participation.
