Poetry Under the Stars
When you think of a Planetarium, the study of the solar system or perhaps a laser show is something that may come to mind. However, in the coming months, the dome at Flint’s Longway Planetarium will have a new use. Poetry with a love theme will be presented as part of the new “Poetry Under the Stars” series. Other presentations will cover rebirth, new beginnings, and faith. The presentations will have a multi-cultural flavor, one with Arabic and French to Polish and Spanish.

Joseph Tyler: Spanish
Joseph Tyler was born in Mexico and grew up in San
Diego, California. His poetry has appeared in
newspapers in Mexico and Argentina, and in journals
such as Discurso Literario and Maiz: Xicano Notebooks.
His work also has been featured in anthologies here and
abroad. Joseph Tyler received his doctorate at the
University of California, San Diego (La Jolla,
California). He has taught at universities in California
and is Professor Emeritus of Spanish at the University of
West Georgia. During the summer of 1986 at Allegheny
College a Symposium was held On/With Jorge Luis
Borges. Dr. Tyler read translations of poems and stories
by Borges on which the author made comments. He is
currently teaching Spanish at the University of
Michigan-Flint.
Jane Gentry Vance: English
Jane Gentry Vance (published as Jane Gentry) was
appointed by the Governor of Kentucky to serve as
Kentucky Poet Laureate for the 2007-2008 term. As
Poet Laureate, Vance promoted the arts and lead the
state in literary endeavors. Central Kentucky has deeply
influenced her writing, and she has a distinguished
career blending her work as a poet and as an educator.
Vance is the author of Portrait of the Artist as a White
Pig, A Year in Kentucky: A Garland of Poems, and A
Garden in Kentucky. Among the many awards Vance
has received are: Finalist for the Heartland Review
Poetry Prize; a Virginia Center for Creative Arts
Fellowship; a Yaddo Fellowship and a Voices and Visions
grant from the National Endowment for the
Humanities and the American Library Association.
